Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease: Early Signs, Support & Resources for Families

Alzheimer’s disease affects millions of families across the United States, touching not only those diagnosed but also the loved ones who stand beside them.
As the most common cause of dementia, Alzheimer’s gradually impacts memory, thinking abilities, and the capacity to manage daily activities. For families in Texas, the need for awareness, early detection, and supportive care has never been more important.

Alzheimer’s by the Numbers: Understanding the growing impact on families in Texas and across the U.S."

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disease that slowly damages areas responsible for memory, decision-making, and behavior. Dementia is the general term used when memory loss and cognitive challenges begin to interfere with everyday life—Alzheimer’s being the leading cause. According to current estimates, 6.9 million Americans aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s in 2024. With no cure yet available, this number is projected to rise sharply, reaching 12.7 million by 2050.

The Impact of Alzheimer’s in Texas
Alzheimer’s disease is a significant and growing public health concern in Texas.
Recent data shows:

Texas ranks 3rd in the U.S. for the number of residents living with Alzheimer’s.
Texas ranks 2nd in Alzheimer’s-related deaths.
In 2020, approximately 460,000 Texans aged 65 and older were living with Alzheimer’s disease.

To address this urgent need, the state has developed the Texas State Plan for Alzheimer’s Disease 2024–2028, outlining strategies to support individuals, caregivers, and communities affected by dementia.
